12th December 2024

We submitted our formal consultation feedback on the 21st November, once again highlighting our objection to the proposals based on feedback received from the local community via our questionnaire and at the SSEN consultation events.  A copy of our objection letter is below if you are interested.
We anticipate feedback on the consultation to be released by SSEN in early 2025.

Towards the end of August, along with 13 other Community Councils, we sent a letter to a number of elected officials at both Westminster and Holyrood.  The recipients included the Prime Minster, First Minster and Energy Ministers of both governments.
The purpose of the letter was to raise the awareness of the objections and complaints coming from our communities and to ask the recipients for support in pausing SSEN's proposals until a full and meaningful conversation could be had.
A copy of this letter is below should you wish to read it.

An update from the Community Council

Ahead of SSENs upcoming events (details below) we wanted to provide you all with an update what we've been up to lately.

Below is just a short summary but as usual there has been hours of meetings, phone calls and emails happening in the background.

The most significant update is that we have written and sent a letter, signed by 13 Community Councils up and down the proposed line to a large number of political representatives in both Westminster, Holyrood and more locally at council level to highlight our concerns at this stage. This letter signed by these Community Councils represents a huge number of residents and therefore we hope the recipients understand the importance and the weight behind it.

On the back of the publication of the Report on Consultation, we have asked SSEN to carry out a fresh consultation on the newly presented route in Drumoak and Durris as we believe it is unfair to proceed to the next stage of Alignment Consultation without doing so. Unfortunately as it stands they are declining to do this.

Similarly we are aware that in this report SSEN suggest the new route came from within the community. We have asked SSEN to confirm who the Community Representatives are that they refer to in their recent consultation feedback as we feel this is misrepresented, especially given the volume of objection they received yet lack of that representation within their report.

We have reached out to Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce to highlight our concerns about the recent article they published suggesting there was support for new infrastructure and offered to meet them to share our data and Intel to ensure they a fair and balanced view going forward.

At the August Kincardine and Mearns Community Council Forum we raised an agenda point asking the Council what support and guidance they could provide and this was supported by other Community Councils in the room who felt the same. However as you may imagine Aberdeenshire Council is limited in that action they can take to ensure they don't compromise their position in future when it comes to actual planning applications. If nothing else it gave us another platform to let Aberdeenshire Council know the views of our community and the challenges we face.

Looking ahead ......

We will officially be in attendance at the SSEN events, with a table, where we'll yet again be engaging with you to collect feedback and asking you to complete a questionnaire to give us data for the next stages.
We appreciate its yet another questionnaire but we can't tell you how valuable this data is for us and our formal feedback.

It is important that as many people in our area attend the upcoming events and let SSEN know what your opinion is.

To reassure you, as it stands and until we have proof otherwise, we will continue to be communicating the feedback that our community says No to Pylons.
No route is acceptable in our area and that there are alternative options and technology to be explored.

Upcoming events
3rd October, Drumoak Bowling Club 2pm to 7pm.
10th October, Durris Kirkton Hall 2pm to 7pm.

25th August 2024

SSEN have recently published their Report on Consultation following the public consultation they undertook in March and April 2024.
The full report can be downloaded from the document section of the project page on their website - Kintore-Tealing 400kV OHL Connection - SSEN Transmission (ssen-transmission.co.uk)

There are 2 sections of the proposed route that impact our communities, section E from the proposed Hurlie Substation to the River Dee and section F from the River Dee towards Kintore.
Under section E, the previously proposed E2 will be taken forward to the alignment stage and a newly identified route E4 will also be considered.
Under section F, the previously proposed F1.3 will be taken forward to the alignment state and a newly identified route F3 will also be considered.

SSEN will begin consulting on alignment with public events planned throughout September and October.  The two events closest to our communities are on - 3rd October, 2pm - 7pm, Drumoak, Durris & Crathes Bowling Club and 10th October, 2pm - 7pm, Durris Kirkton Hall.
We would encourage everyone to attend the events to find out as much as they can and feedback to SSEN.
More details of other events can be found on the project page on their website - link above.

June 2024

The report on consultation for the Hurlie Substation was released and can be downloaded from the project page on the SSEN website - Hurlie 400kV substation - SSEN Transmission (ssen-transmission.co.uk)

The site for the substation is of a significant size and we have raised concerns that whilst consultation focuses on just the substation for the 400kV overhead line, the cumulative impact of future projects that may connect to this substation should also be shared.

One element to note, is that all construction traffic, will travel through our communities using the North and South Deeside Road and the Slug Road.
Over a course of a 3 year period, this equates to approx. 9000 HGV's - full detail on this can be found within the consultation documents.

May 2024

A heartfelt thanks to everyone who took the time to complete our questionnaires, get in touch and provide us with their feedback or simply copy us in to relevant correspondence - it is very much appreciated.

As a Community Council we have provided SSEN and our local elected representatives with our formal feedback on the revised route F1.3 River Dee to Coldstream as well as on the proposed Hurlie Substation.

At this time, we would encourage you to keep attending events hosted by SSEN and letting them and your elected representatives know what your opinion is and ask any questions you may have.

Local action groups along the length of the proposed overhead line are also hosting regular events to keep members of the public up to date and like the above, we would encourage you to attend these.

We'll update this section with more information when we have it.

The next period of public consultation has now commenced.
This is now the time to formally feedback on the revised route, in particular for our community on F1.3 River Dee to Coldstream by Drumoak.

You can submit your feedback until 30th April 2024 via: their online feedback form, by emailing [email protected] or writing to them at SSEN Transmission, 10 Henderson Road, Inverness, IV1 1SN.

More information can be found here -

We urge as many of you as possible to provide feedback at this time.
We do appreciate many of you have previously contact them and your local council / government representatives but as this was out with the formal consultation period we can't guarantee it will be taken in to consideration.

Our plea to you is fairly simple, please send in your feedback at this time, whether that be forwarding your previous email again or indeed drafting something new following the recent consultation events.
Let's make sure your voices are heard officially.

We'll use the feedback from our questionnaire to submit a formal response from the Community Council, thank you to everyone who took time to complete it.

Deeside Against Pylons

DAP - is a local action group that has been formed.  The Committee of the group is made up of volunteers from around our community, with a vast range of experience and expertise.  They will begin hosting various different events and publicising information that it sees relevant.

You can keep up to date with DAP through their page on Facebook, click on this link - Deeside Against Pylons | Facebook

As a Community Council we will work alongside DAP throughout this project, as we have done with other action groups and other projects.
At this stage, we are unaware of any action groups in support of the proposal, but urge anyone to contact us if they are so we can connect with them too.

Update February 2024

We held a drop in session with SSEN and your local politicians at Drumoak Primary School on 15th February.
Approx. 300 people attended the event and engaged with SSEN and our politicians.
We are currently collating all of ypur questionnaire results into our digital version and will share the results in due course.

As a Community Council we have engaged with a number of Community Councils up and down the proposed line to ensure we have open communication and collaboration.
We are beginning to work as one team and gather together feedback so we can represent residents in our communities when the time is right.

Update July 2023
We have collated the survey results and provided SSEN with the feedback.  As part of our input to their consultation we have advised that we object to the new OHL and have suggested that an underground / subsea option would be far more suitable.

As many of you are, we are aware of the proposed new over head line by SSEN that will run through the heart of our communities.

At our Community Council meeting on 14th June, SSEN presented an overview of the project and answered questions the community had.  A copy of their presentation is on the right of this text.

The summary file on the right was created by a local resident to try and provide an overview of what is going on and the link on the right will take you to the virtual consultation page for more information.

Please do provide us, your local councillors, MSP and SSEN with your feedback ASAP.  It's important your voice is heard.
